It’s official:

TripAdvisor has crowned the Colosseum as 2019’s most popular monument in the world!

Over the course of the past year, the number of tours booked at the Flavian Amphitheater and the site’s approval rating have surpassed those of Paris’s Louvre, which came in at a close second in the ranking.

Conservation, fruition and promotion policies put in place since the institution of the Parco archeologico del Colosseo have proven successful.

“In the past two years, the public’s familiarity with the site has increased thanks to new thematic itineraries (from the archaeological nature path to the multimedia itinerary dedicated to ancient painting), permanent exhibitions (“Il Colosseo si racconta”) and temporary shows (“Roma Universalis. L’Impero e la dinastia venuta dall’Africa” in 2018 and “Carthago. The immortal myth”, inaugurated last September and still in progress)” — says Alfonsina Russo, Director of the Parco archeologico del Colosseo with pride. “The PArCo has also improved its hospitality towards foreign visitors with the availability of Korean language audio guides and informational panels in Chinese, in addition to our website now being available in Chinese and Spanish (www.parcocolosseo.it).

But that’s not all, as restorations and research are currently underway in the Colosseum to increase the number of visitor itineraries, for example the so-called “Passage of Commodus”: the secret tunnel used by emperors to access the imperial tribune where literary sources speak of an assassination attempt on the emperor Commodus.

Additionally, plans are being made to give visitors access to the monument’s uppermost levels, contributing to an even more breathtaking visit to the Colosseum.
