As reported in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic, the new Prime Ministerial Decree in force from 5 November 2020 to 3 December 2020 imposes the temporary closure of all cultural sites and the suspension of all scheduled exhibitions, effective Friday, 6 November 2020.

The Parco archeologico del Colosseo must thereby temporarily close its 4 sites, the Roman Forum, Palatine, Colosseum and Domus Aurea and suspend all activities related to the show “Pompei 79 d.C. Una storia romana”, the inauguration for which was scheduled for 5 November.

The Parco archeologico del Colosseo’s ‘fifth site’, that is our website and all of the digital content available across our official social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube) will stay open and active, continuing to converse, interact and build relationships with the public.

Plenty of rich and varied programming is on the way.

Mark your calendar for the Night of the Museums on 14 November: viewers will have the chance to enter the Colosseum by night to hear a retelling of the iconic monument’s nearly 2,000 years of history.

To celebrate the three-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Giambattista Piranesi, we’re presenting the new app “Il PArCo di Piranesi” (“Piranesi’s PArCo”), designed by the PArCo in collaboration with the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica and with the fundamental contribution of Kuwait Petroleum Italia. The app celebrates the famous engraver-architect who forever immortalized our PArCo’s most breathtaking views and monuments.

Our “Passeggiate nel PArCo” (“Walks through the PArCo”) will continue, with the episode “Abitare sul Palatino” (“Living on the Palatine”), an in-depth investigation enriched by images and video, from the Casa Romuli — home of the city’s mythical founder — to the elegant residences of the aristocratic families that occupied the hill from the Renaissance on.

The suspension of the exhibition “Pompei 79 d.C. Una storia romana” (“Pompeii 79 AD. A Roman story”) will only affect on-site visits: we’re launching an online version of the show that will tell the story of the connection between Rome and Pompeii through the two cities’ distinctive and characteristic features evident in their socio-economic relations and in their artistic and cultural aspects, all of which we can document through archaeology. A selection of the 100 objects on display will be featured in our online narration of the story of Pompeii before and after its alliance with Rome.

Our Wednesday morning Facebook Lives from restoration and maintenance sites will continue: the Temple of Vesta, the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Temple of Venus and Roma, the Colosseum, but also the extraordinary asset constituted by the area’s mosaic and marble floors, including a special preview of the 6th century AD sectile from the taberna in the Basilica Aemilia.
