The course in restoration of historical gardens and parks was held by the School of Specialization in Architectural Heritage and Landscape at La Sapienza Università in Rome, in conjunction with the Parco archeologico del Colosseo, as a theoretical-practical workshop.

The architect Gabriella Strano taught the project for the restoration of a historical garden to students not only through lectures to develop an understanding of the historical garden and methods of restoration, but also through direct experience of a site. A parterre was restored in the south-east part of the Farnese Gardens, where the original lines traced by Giacomo Boni were still recognizable but badly decayed. The parterre contains three important trees (Styrax officinalis), which the German Cardinal Gustav Adolf von Hohenlohe donated to Boni in the late 19th century.
