Portrait of Trajan

This male head, larger than life-sized, was found on the slopes of the Palatine during the 2000 excavations. The shape of the base of the beck, where traces of a metal pin can still be found, indicates that the head was meant to be inserted into a statue. Thanks to the sculpture’s facial features and hairstyle, with short, soft locks falling onto the forehead, the subject is easily identifiable as the emperor Trajan, portrayed here at a mature age, as suggested by the deep wrinkles around the mouth and bags under the eyes.
